Letter I just wrote to People Magazine

Dear Editor: I grew up watching Melissa Gilbert on "Little House on the Prairie," never missing an episode. So it was especially sad for me to read her opinion of adoption in the most recent People Magazine since I am a birth mom who placed my child for adoption in 2000 so she could have a better life. Did it ever occur to Mrs. Gilbert that she probably would not have had the success she's had if her birth mom didn't make the decision she did? In this day and age it still amazes me the horrible… Continue

My published letter that ran in this week's Fort Worth Weekly

Katia’s Home To the editor: Thank you for another great expose in the form of “Saving Katia” (July 2, 2008). I’m a birth mom, so the story was especially sad to read, but also eye-opening. Luckily, I placed my daughter in a semi-open adoption and get to see her on a pretty regular basis. She knows I’m her birth mom and has no emotional or mental problems. On the flip side, I was also a resident of a group home as a juvenile and later was a child advocate, so I’ve seen all sides of the issue. It… Continue

McCain opposes gays’ right to adopt

By Associated Press Jul 17, 2008 - 6:53:10 PM Email this article Printer friendly page NEW YORK — Advocates for gay and lesbian parents are denouncing Sen. John McCain, an adoptive father himself, for opposing adoptions by gays, which prompted his presidential campaign to clarify Tuesday,, July 15, that he does not seek a federal ban on the practice. Only one state, Florida, outlaws adoptions by gays, which have become commonplace in much of the nation. The Republican nominee-in-waiting was as… Continue

Arkansas conservatives working to put adoption ban on 2008 ballot

By Andrew DeMillo Associated Press Aug 30, 2007 - 8:52:00 PM Email this article Printer friendly page LITTLE ROCK A conservative group hopes a ballot item that would ban unmarried couples from adopting or fostering children will effectively reinstate a ban on gay foster parents overturned by the state's highest court. The head of the Arkansas Family Council said Thursday, Aug. 23, that the broader ban would withstand court challenges better than a measure focusing only on gays and lesbians. "W… Continue

Letter published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Aug. 2006

Dear Editor: As a birth mom who placed my newborn daughter for adoption through Gladney in August 2000, my heart broke for "Keila" in the Aug. 13th Star-Telegram article about the girl whose mom abandoned her as an infant. It baffles me why so many birth moms simply abandon their babies instead of going though the adoptive process. Before my birth daughter, who will be six tomorrow (the 15th) was born I made her a scrapbook and I send her letters, email cards, and gifts so that she will always k… Continue
